Reynolda Discovery Lessons promote reading readiness and visual literacy for preschoolers through dramatic play, music, movement, and artmaking, using a work of art or item from Reynolda’s collection as a starting point. The program takes place indoors and outdoors.

Saturday, February 24: Bachman’s Warbler, John James Audubon, 1833
In this Discovery Lesson, we will study the rarest North American songbird, Bachman’s Warbler - that is now extinct. We will also discover what it means to be a naturalist and provide hands-on activities on activities John James Audubon loved when he was a child - music, drawing and nature.

Saturday, June 29: Orchid with Two Hummingbirds, Martin Johnson Heade, 1871
In this Discovery Lesson participants will study the abundance of cut flowers represented in the painting Flowers in a Glass Pitcher with Bird’s Nest and Fruit, Severin Rosen (c.1816-1872) by doing a simple dissection of flowers from Reynolda Gardens, arranging a floral bouquet and painting their own floral image showcasing a variety of blooms.

Saturday, July 20: Phlox, David Johnson 1827-1908
During this Discovery Lesson we will practice close-looking skills to learn about garden phlox, or Phlox paniculata. We will use a thinking routine to learn more about the painting Phlox, David Johnson 1827-1908. Participants will also have the opportunity to plant their own phlox to take home, re-create the painting on a canvas and use a variety of magnifying tools to closely study the attributes of the flower.

Saturday, September 21: Flowers in a Glass Pitcher with Bird’s Nest and Fruit, Severin Rosen (c.1816-1872) - Still Life
During this Discovery Lesson we will examine the special attributes of hummingbirds as well as study cross-pollination with a hand-on simulation. We will make 3-D models of a hummingbird and nest and learn how to increase and maintain the hummingbird population in our community.

Saturday, November 23: Portraits
Participants will be introduced to portraits painted in true likeness as participants learn more about the elegance and artfulness of this time. Learn more about the painting Anna Dorothea Foster and Charlotte Anna Dick by Gilbert Stuart (c. 1755-1828) through the exploration of handi-crafts, a dramatic play tea station, and creating a self-portrait.
